Question
QUESTION: I just bought a new computer through dell. Its a xps410.I recently owned a diminsion which Is still running and I actually still injoy using.Anyway the new computer seems to be a dissapointment for me.I was expecting a quite computer one that sounds new.My old computer is quite.I am constantly annoyed by the new computer because you can always her the brain reading and stuff.I read alot so its annoying me .I have also used other peoples computers and you could hear noise on theres but it wasnt as much noise and there computers were also a few years old .It is starting to scare me because Its a pricey computer and I dont want a lemon.dell is telling me that because its a larger computer it will be louder. If I return it or exchange it it would cost me 3%restocking of $1100.and shipping and handeling. If there is something wrong with it according to dell I would have to take off the pannel find it with tech support on the phone .They refuse to have anyone come to the house if someone at home can do the repair. My computer doesnt sound broken but it sounds noisy like an old computer. Are larger computers like this much noiseir???I like most of dells stuff but because of there polocies and stuff I dont think I am going to shop through them anymore.Do you have any advise? What am I suppose to be hearing?and Not hearing?

ANSWER: It doesn't sound like anything is wrong if there is no actual error or problem with operation. The system makes more noise likely due to having more cooling fans, which are required to keep it cool. You really shouldn't need someone sent out to check it out when nothing is wrong (based on what you've said). I also don't think Dell has done anything wrong with the system, especially nothing warranting discontinuation of being a Dell client.

QUESTION: I am not saying that dell has done enough wrong to discontinue being a client but its easier to go out and get a computer and be able to exchange it if the business is right down the street. Also The noise is like a reading noise and its loud.I know I am used to a smaller computer but I don't know if thats what I am hearing or not.I did open the panel and listened but I could not see a problem .So you think that the computer is okay and I am just needing to get used to it?I can actually feel it running from like the top of the table its weird. If you buy a larger processor and more memory does that make it louder to?I know these are all weird questions.I have been on other computers and never noticed this but than again they were not mine either. Thanks for your time, help, and honesty

Answer
I'm not sure what you are meaning by "a larger system" or "a reading noise". If you mean a more capable system, or faster system, it likely has more fans due to the higher heat output of the silicon devices. And if by reading noise you mean the hard-drive access noise, its likely just normal operation. If you have file errors, however, I would maybe consider replacing the hard drive.
