Experience I've been in the 3D/2D CAD industry for 10 yrs. & also had the opportunity/exposure to operate with several mainstream design packages. I've assisted many firms facilitate their 3D migration process.
Question I have seen an employment ad that requires that a Certificate of Competency be sent with a resume (Cad position). Where would one obtain one? Do classes need to be taken in order to received one or can one just take some kind of test to get one?
Thank you for your time.
Answer Hi Sheri, yes classes are definitely required. You can just about acquire in your area whether a Technical Institute or Community College offer these CAD courses. These courses normally run about a year for certificate or two to get an associates degree (Computer Aided Drafting & Design). This covers the drafting aspects of mechanical, architectural, civil, and/or electrical. Most of the commonly used 2D software here in the U.S. is AutoCAD. Its versatility just about covers all of the 4 mentioned fields. 3D on the otherhand is not widely accepted yet but its potential is just now being considered.
An option you might wanna consider trying is to check www.ADDA.org (American Design Drafting Association) if you're already a long time CAD user. Take the 'Drafter Certification Exam' but first notify the employer you're applying for if they'll accept this type of certification. Please note, the test only covers drafting concepts/standards & not the Software. The website should direct you to test sites, dates, forms, links, etc. Hope this helps! Just let me know or any of the other guys if you need anything else!
