CD-ROMS & DVD Problems/DVD/CD Burner stopped recognizing CD-R's

Question
Hello,
For some strange reason, my DVD/CD burner suddenly stopped burning or even recognizing CD-R's.  It has no problem burning DVD's or CD-RW's - but it does not want to recognize CD-R's anymore.  Where should I start in diagnosing this glitch?  Have you ever heard of this happening before?
Thanks,
Jason

Answer
Hi Jason,
Afraid so, all these drives use a dual laser package, one for CDRs and the other for DVDRs, (funnily enough it is also used for CD-RWs), so your CD laser has packed up. It's far cheaper to get a replacement drive than a repair, even if you could find some one to try it.

Roy

Hi, I have been doing this spot here for some years now, and I like to think that I have helped a few people here and there, but due to advancing years and failing health, I'm afraid that I have decided that I can no longer carry on since I can no longer guarantee to be able to answer questions in a reasonable timescale. I should like to thank all the other experts and the users of this site for what has been an enjoyable and enlightening experience. I shall be terminating next Sunday 12th November 2006.
