CD-ROMS & DVD Problems/DVD/CD Drive won't open

Question
Hi There, I have a DVD/CD rewriter on my computer. I went to burn a disc today and the drawer will not open! When I start the computer the light is on to the drive so know there is power there. I have also uninstalled the drive and the re-installed it but it still won't open! Any ideas!

Answer
Hi Kirsty,
This is normally caused when there is a disk in the drive which cannot be read. This may be a faulty or damaged disk or a fault with the drive. You will find a small hole just below the drawer on the front of the drive. Make sure the system is shut down, then carefully probe into the hole with a stiff piece of wire such as a straightened paper clip until the drive starts to open. The drive can then be gently pulled open the rest of the way, and the disk removed. If another disk causes the same problem, it is very likely you need a new drive.

Hi, I have been doing this spot here for some years now, and I like to think that I have helped a few people here and there, but due to advancing years and failing health, I'm afraid that I have decided that I can no longer carry on since I can no longer guarantee to be able to answer questions in a reasonable timescale. I should like to thank all the other experts and the users of this site for what has been an enjoyable and enlightening experience. I shall be terminating next Sunday 12th November 2006.
