-----Question-----
Sadly, when we put in a Windows XP CD, it doesn't do anything at all, it stops when it says : Boot from CD-ROM
It says:
"Boot from CD-ROM:
_"
( the _ blinks )
It then stays like that for however long we leave the computer on, it does nothing else.

Any other tips?
-----Answer-----
OK Chris, send me a specification of the machine, and I'll see what I can do.

Answer
Hi Chris,
Well it's fairly obvious why you couldn't get '98 to load! You might just as well have tried picking up a steam train by the smoke coming out of the locomotive's smoke stack. As for the failure of XP, did the drive light come on and stay on, come on then go off, or just not come on at all? Not that it matters too much, you either have a faulty XP disk, a faulty drive, or there is a fault with the system which is causing the drive not to function properly.
I am assuming that it is a proper XP installation disk you have, not a restore disk from anther system. Can you test the disk in another system to see if it will boot then? If it does, you have a hardware fault in the new system, if not you have a faulty disk. Either way I assume a warranty claim would be the best answer.

Roy

Hi, I have been doing this spot here for some years now, and I like to think that I have helped a few people here and there, but due to advancing years and failing health, I'm afraid that I have decided that I can no longer carry on since I can no longer guarantee to be able to answer questions in a reasonable timescale. I should like to thank all the other experts and the users of this site for what has been an enjoyable and enlightening experience. I shall be terminating next Sunday 12th November 2006.
