Question
I have a sound problem when playing a dvd movie. The sounds is great and its actually perfect but for one problem. The speech is very soft and the background music and ambience is very loud. I tried tweaking all my sounds settings but nothing seems to work. Can you give me some advice? Thanx

Answer
I suspect you have got the sound settings mixed up on your playback system. It probably defaults to 5.1 surround sound, and the speech is fed 90% to the centre channel on that system. If you don't have surround sound with a centre channel, you just won't get the speech. Reset your system to use whatever speaker setup you actually have, and the problem should be resolved.

Hi, I have been doing this spot here for some years now, and I like to think that I have helped a few people here and there, but due to advancing years and failing health, I'm afraid that I have decided that I can no longer carry on since I can no longer guarantee to be able to answer questions in a reasonable timescale. I should like to thank all the other experts and the users of this site for what has been an enjoyable and enlightening experience. I shall be terminating next Sunday 12th November 2006.
