Question
i installed a sony dvd internal drive. it will play cd music fine but when i play a dvd movie there is no sound. i have tried to play in Nero, windows media player, and PC friendly. none have sound in the movie all have sound in music. would this be a problem with my sound card needing to be upgraded?

Answer
Hi Barry,
No, this is nothing to do with your sound card, it's just that where CD audio is hardwired direct to the sound card, DVD audio is stored in a compressed format, in fact often in several formats, and if you select the wrong format for playback it won't be decoded properly so you won't get sound. First make sure your system is playing mp3 files correctly, if so it should be playing DVDs too, so check what audio format your players are trying to extract.

Hi, I have been doing this spot here for some years now, and I like to think that I have helped a few people here and there, but due to advancing years and failing health, I'm afraid that I have decided that I can no longer carry on since I can no longer guarantee to be able to answer questions in a reasonable timescale. I should like to thank all the other experts and the users of this site for what has been an enjoyable and enlightening experience. I shall be terminating next Sunday 12th November 2006.
