Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Painting dresser over finish

Question
I have a small dresser that I am attempting to paint black to match a baby crib. The black finish that I am wanting is a flat, smooth finish. Currently the dresser is stained with a dark, satin finish and no damage. What steps should I take to get the best finish possible, and what type of paint should I use to get the flattest, smoothest black finish? I don't want to use something that will peel or crack, and I want something that will still wipe clean.

Answer
Hi Elisabeth
Nice to hear from you.
First the proper prep is essential.
For this job I would use some medium steel wool and a TSP solution. Give the dresser a scrub with this and you will be ready to paint.
Because you want a flat black finish, and because flat black paint will not be suitable for this on its own, I recommend a coat of matte glaze be applied over the flat black paint.
Use water based flat black and the glaze of course is water based.
Get good quality products and use a foam roller for the flat areas and a good quality water based brush.
Great project

Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
