Question
Hi!

One of the four legs of my dining room chair cracked near the seat so there is a lot of levarage on that point.  Do you think Elmers wood glue will be strong enough to hold it together or do you have another suggestion?  The chair costed about $65.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi David,

I think Elmer's wood glue will work, but I really suggest using Titebond wood glue. I just think it will bond the wood better than good old Elmer's. But many woodworkers use Elmers, so it should be fine as long as you do one thing.

You MUST clamp the crack together while the glue is drying. You can't just put some glue in the crack and push it together. It must be clamped, or the glue line will not be strong.

I suggest you figure out a way to clamp it.  You may have to use small pieces of wood or cardboard to keep the clamp from denting your wood. Put padding on the areas where the clamp will be touching the wood, to protect it.

Use something slender to work the glue deep into the crack. You want to spread the glue as well as you can, all across the raw wood. Use your clamping blocks, and apply pressure with your clamp.

Wipe off any excess glue drips while it's still relatively wet. I suggest letting the glue set up slightly, like 10-15 minutes, and then peel it off gently with your fingernail. Leave the clamp on overnight and your repair should be complete.

OK, hope this helps, write back if you have any other questions.
