Question
What is the best width boards to use in gluing up for a 11 1/4" step tread? Can I use 2 boards 5 5/8" or more?

I personally would use three pieces minimum. The glue laminate process provides a longer lasting, more stable stair tread that will not warp. Two pieces are okay, but I am comfortable with a three piece minimum. Working with the same lumber stock helps, knowing they have equal moisture content and better color, grain matching.
