Question
Do i lay glass on a wood dining table top?  I thought this will create cracks on
the wood top without allowing the wood to breathe.

Answer
If the wood is already varnished or lacquered, it is sealed and cannot breathe.  Allowing wood to breathe, leaving unfinished, allows the wood to crack, split and warp.  You really don't want a dining room table that breathes. Laying glass on a table, if the wood is finished, will do it no harm unless sunlight has access, which can cause discoloration or bleaching.
