Question
Hi Kirk:

I have just put a couple of scratches in an old dark walnut stained dresser.  Can I repair this without completely sanding down the top of the dresser?

Answer
If the scratches are thin and light, I would suggest using "triple zero" steel wool to smooth down the area. Then try using a furniture oil(not wax based) sometimes the oil can make those light scratches disappear.

If the scratches are a deeper and not small, you may want to try lightly sanding (or steel wool) the area. You could then try a tone finish spray. They sell these sprays at most hardware stores. I prefer the company "Mohawk" spray. Sometimes the tone finish spray will make the "lighter" sanded area go right back to normal. Before you use the spray try the furniture oil first, it may be good enough.(note:use the spray very lightly, too much will ruin the area)

If none of the above works, there are always touch up pens that you could try. You'd be surprised how well they work.  A company called "Guardsman" sells great touch up pens at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Hope this Helps.
