Question
I am refinishing my kitchen cabinet doors. Someone told me to use laquer and shellac for the finish. Is this a good idea
and what finish do I put on first?

Answer
I would use one or the other, but not both.  In new construction, most are lacquered.   It is ideal to use a pre-catalyzed lacquer which has a sanding sealer base and lacquer together.  Otherwise you would use a lacquer-based sanding sealer as a first coat.  Once dry, buff-sand it with 300 to 600 grit paper.  The sealer will raise the grain and seal the pours.  Once sanded, you lay on one or two coats of lacquer, sanding in between each coat to your desired finished.   Shellac is best used if wood is exposed to the elements, such as an exterior door.  I've also found it a little more difficult to work with and get the desired furniture grade finish.  Hope that helps answer your question.
