Question
I bought a classic solid wood farm table and six chairs about twelve years ago. The finish has yellowed. I still like the set, but I would like to have that dark distressed farm table look. Is there a product I can use to darken it, or do I have to go through the agony of stripping and sanding? (Mother of three tiny ones)

Answer
Hi Marie Mother of three
You could try one of those darker colored varnishes.
They have color suspended in the actual finish.
But do a test first.
Just by a tiny can to start.
Surface prep is most important as the varnish needs a "tooth" so it can stick.
You can sand, or use a medium steel wool pad dipped in a TSP solution and give the set a very agressive scrub.
This should deglaze the surface.
But only do a sample first to try.
It could save a lot of work and be just what you wanted.
Might have to give two coats with a light sanding between.
Good Luck and great question.

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
