Question
Hi - I wanted some advice on storing furniture made of alder wood (stained to mimic cherry). I have a queen ann style bedroom set that needs to be stored for approximately 3-4 months (Oct-Jan/Feb in New Jersey). Is it safe to store this in a non-climate controlled storage unit that is located indoors if I use a moisture control product like Damp-Rid? Or must this be stored in a climate controlled unit? Also, is there any other protection you'd recommend for the pieces (e.g. cover with blankets, plastic, etc.)? Thanks much.

Answer
3-4 months isn't too bad. But I highly recommend oiling the wood before storage. If the wood has a good amount of sealer on it, you need not worry too much. If it is open natural wood, you want to oil it. I recommend getting an oil/conditioner. What this does is, it basically gives the wood some moisture, if the wood is sitting for too long and gets dry, you may get some cracking.

The wood needs to be able to breathe, so I would recommend a plastic cover (in case of water) but allow the air to get in (maybe from the bottom) Don't make the plastic air tight. And a blanket or 2 couldn't hurt.

Hope this helps.
