Question
I would like to use Varathane Diamond Wood Stain (water clean up) as a tint in natural Danish Oil. They look to be about the same-(waterborne)  What do you think?
Thanks.

Answer
Peg,

If the Varathane Diamond Wood Stain is a water based product, then you cannot use it to tint Watco. Watco is not water based, but rather, is a synthetic oil product.

Without being cliche, it would be like mixing water with oil.

You can, however, stain the wood first with the Varathane Diamond Wood Stain, let it cure, and then apply the Watco over it. Curing could take several days, depending on the humidity and temperature in your area.

That is why I prefer to do the staining and oiling all at the same time, which is why I mix the tinted Watco oils with the Natural (clear) oil. When I mix the two, I do a few tests to see the color I've made. Once I get the right shade, then I'll apply it to the wood.

Remember, when you oil something, it appears darker than it really is. When it dries, you'll see a truer version of it. But since it's recommended that you apply 2-3 coats, you might want to start off a tad lighter, and then it will darken with the subsequent coats. It's really something you have to get a "feel" for using, so I suggest you sand a piece of scrap wood and experiment.

Hope this helps. Write back if you have more questions,
