Question
Hello:  We purchase a home that's about 120 years old and has old barnwood kitchen cabinets. They are in descent shap as far as structure but they are so dark (grey/dark grey) I am considering whitewashing them or painting or something to brighten things up.  They are nothing like I have ever seen honestly and there's not alot of info out there on taking on this project.  Any advice would be great. Thank you and have a nice day.

Answer
Hi Jenney
Nice to hear from you.
I think you are on the right track with your idea of a whitewash to lighten this old barn board.
I've worked with a lot of old pine barnboards and to even think of sanding it or even painting it is not a good idea.
But a thorough test is a must before you do anything.
Get a small can of white latex paint.
Hopefully you can test on the back of a cupboard door or drawer back.
Start by mixing the paint like this..
1 part paint to three parts water.
Then test a small area.
I would apply this mixture with a coarse brush and wipe back any excess with a rag.
If the wood is still too dark, mix half and half.
You get the idea Jenney.
In this way you will be able to get the correct formula that pleases you.
I would apply a clear coat over this for added protection.
I would use Minwax fast drying water based poly in a satin sheen.
Great project but test test test LOL.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
