Question
QUESTION: Good afternoon,

I am planning on making a set of floor mounted cabinets to fill a wall in my family room. My plan is to make 2 6ft cabinets with 4 doors and put them together. Then trim and fit the top. I have a large TV to place on it. I want to stow all my stereo gear in here. At a later time, I want to build some sheaves to fit. Is the cabinet height the same as standard base cabinets? Or, are they a little lower.

Please advise.

Keith.

ANSWER: Hi Keith,

Your question is a little vague, so it's hard for me to understand what you're asking. You asked this:  Is the cabinet height the same as standard base cabinets? Or, are they a little lower.

Do you mean standard kitchen base cabinets? Bathroom vanities? Office cabinetry? I have no idea, but I would think the most important thing is to decide where you want your TV to sit on your entertainment wall, and then design the cabinets to a height that will best suit viewing.

Therefore, there really isn't a "set" height that the cabinets should be, it's all depending on your TV, and the setup within your room.

Sorry I can't help more, but if you write back with a little more information, I'll try to help you with specifics.

QUESTION: Thanks for the help. I meant to say kitchen height. I have a book and all base cabinets in it are 36" finish height. That seemed a little high for what I have planned. But, you did say I can vary it. That is good news. I just didn't what to build something odd ball.

Thanks.

Keith

Answer
Keith,

If the 36" height is too tall for your taste, you would be fine building it at 30" or 32". I generally try to build things in even increments. Thirty inches is the standard height of most tables and desks. Bathroom vanities are usually 32" tall.

Like I said, you would be fine making your base cabinets at either of those two heights.

Good luck, write back if you have more questions.
