Question

Hi Eileen
I have a sofa table stained in light oak, that has a slight sheen to it. Can I just sand it down or do I need to strip it.
I would like to restain it a darker color.

Answer
Hi Sonya
Nice to hear from you.
This is a very nice table by the way.
In order to restain this piece, all the existing finish must be removed with paint stripper.
Just sanding will not work.
Then do some testing (maybe on an underside spot) to see if you can get the color you desire (better still test before you strip).
Personally (although you did not ask LOL), I like the present color and would not mess with perfection.
I do however realise that this darker color wood is what folks desire today.
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
