It usually depends on how bad the water damage is. If the stain is a white color, this means it wasn't too bad and it just dried out that area of wood. You can get a furniture oil(one made for oak)and try to pull most of it out with that, and also try using "triple zero" steel wool in combination with it.

If the stain is dark, this is bad, it means it penetrated too much and has almost permanently stained or changed the wood. At this point you need a professional to come out and repair it. Most furniture repair or refinish companies can help.
