Question
Hi
I received this old sewing machine cabinet from a friend.
It was in really bad shape stored in a shed outside the veneer on the top back and sides were leaving and peeling off. For the most part I started removing what was lifting. The drawers are still in good shape.Any tips on how can bring this piece back to life would be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind that this is my first restoration project. Thanks Paul

Answer
Hi Paul
Nice to hear from you.
Short of applying new veneer which may be out of the question if you are new at this, the only solution is to paint the entire thing.
No need to remove veneer that is intact, but all the loose stuff will need to go.
You will notice the underlying wood is not great.
You will need to do lots of filling and sanding to get a nice smooth surface.
Can you imagine this cabinet painted a matte black?
Bet it would look stunning.
Paul do have a random orbit sander? This tool will be invaluable for the job.
No need for a fancy expensive one.
A cheapie can be had for $30.00
And I would be interested in seeing the completed project, and I am certainly here if you need help along the way.
Projects like this are what I enjoy most of all.

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
