Question
One day while I was away, my helper used Pledge floor shiner on my dining room table. I am not sure if it is wax or just some kind of shiner. (The information is all in Chinese).  I have checked the Pledge site, but there is not a picture of the exact same bottle. Anyway, she also used the wrong kind of cloth as well, so that the result is being able to see huge wiping marks all over my wooden dining room table.  The table already had a rather shiny finish to begin with. No amount of water or elbow grease will budge these marks. What shall I do to get my table back to like before? De-waxing stuff? Sand it down and refinish? Any other suggestions?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Joan
Nice to hear from you.
Oh goodness, sorry this has happened.
But help is on the way LOL.
Get a small can of mineral spirits (sold as varsol in Canada).
And I liked your reference to "de-waxing stuff" because this is.
Dampen a soft cloth with the spirits and wipe all this crap off.
Then a nice waxing.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
