Question
started painting my kitchen cabinets with ben moore water based primer. i used 1 coat. let dry. then proceeded to paint with ben moore wood and metal low luster paint.  found a little lump on the cabinet, tried to pick it off with my finger ended up lifting all the paint and primer off of cabinet.  it just peeled like tape.  i preped the cabinets by washing and sanding.  where did i go wrong?? will any paint stick to these cheap cabinets???

Answer
Hi Maria
Nice to hear from you.
Oh my gosh what a fix.
Your prepping sounds fine so the problem has to be with the paint.
It must be oil based paint you used after the water based primer.
Would you check the can. Does it say Alkyd paint?
Or does cleanup require paint thinner?
And yes, there should be no reason these cabinets cannot be painted even if this Veneer you refer to happens to be that plastic type.
I have painted this stuff in the past with excellent results.
Get back to me.

Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
