Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/pedestal base for washer and dryer

Question
I'd like to build a pedestal base for my washer and dryer because I have a bad back and want to limit how much I bend to do chores.  I know the dimensions need to be 58" long and 26" deep and I'd like the 'box' to be 24" high.  How do you build a box with these dimensions but is sturdy enough to hold the weight of a washer and dryer?

Answer
Hi Mignon, you could make such a box with a good 3/4" ply wood, using standard cabinet construction techniques, dadoing the support pieces under the floor into the side pieces, and using construction adhesive and screws. It could be further reinforced with angle blocks at the intersections.Use an exterior ply wood so that it can get wet without a problem...you can find BC (I believe) grade exterior plywood which will have one smooth side...then you can paint it if desired, or just sand smooth and put a clear sealer on it. If this seems too daunting, any good carpenter or cabinet maker should be able to produce this for you fairly reasonably....hope that helps- post back if need be- regards- Greg
