Question
QUESTION: I have a black birch veneer dining room table that I love and am very careful with, however, recently after a party I noticed when cleaning that my table has two quarter sized shiny spots.  The finish on the table is like a satin or egg shell.  I had a thin tablecloth on the table when this happend.  According to other websites I looked at, it might be from constant rubbing? What could these spots be and how would i go about fixing them?

ANSWER: Hi Carrie, a lot of things could create a shiny spot, oil, grease, salad dressing....I suppose rubbing could burnish the finish slightly, but what would cause that? If you haven't already, clean the table with a dishrag and warm water with a little dishwashing soap in it and hand dry the top. See if that helps. What maintenance product do you use on the table?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly.  To clean the table I use warm water and hand dry it clean which I did immediately after I discovered the two shiny spots on the table.  I do not use any maintenance products on the table only water.  Is there something that I could try to maybe draw the the oil or grease out of the table?  I am willing to try anything.

Answer
Hi Carrie, water alone will not remove grease or oils, you need a slight amount of a detergent, like Dawn, or Joy....to cut it. You also should not wash too often with water, and make sure you dry the surface thoroughly each time. Once or twice a year you should use something on it, like an oil based polish , silicone free, such as Gaurdsman, Old English, or Weimans. It helps to repel dirt and stains, and also keeps them from sticking, as well as giving the finish an overall evenness. Remeber if you do decide to do that to wipe these off really well too.
