Question
My'40's sofa is stuffed with straw and I would like to keep it original when I reupholster. It is very dusty. Can I clean it in any way or is there a store where I can buy new stuffing? The antique sofas were stuffed with either horse hair or straw .

Answer
Hi,

The only way to clean the existing stuffing it to thoroughly vacuum it.  Straw, cellulose fiber, moss, coconut fiber, hog hair, horse hair which were used extensively in the past are no longer available since they do not meet flammability standards.  That is unfortunate since they are all 100% natural and biodegradable, they have been replaced with polyester foam which is toxic.

So, again, to answer your question, only vacuuming will clean the existing filling,  do not use anything that will get it wet or it will mildew and begin to smell.

I hope this answers your question,  please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further help.
