Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Varnishing a table

Question
Hi Joseph,

I have read a previous question regarding varnishing a dining room table where you mention that you should use a brush if you don't have a sprayer available - is it possible to apply the varnish with a roller instead? Also, I have done 3 layers of varnish and find the last layer is very uneven - is it easier to remove all the varnish and start again instead of working at fixing the problem I have?

Your help is very much appreciated.

Cheers

Matthew

Answer
Matthew,

A roller is the last thing I would use, as it creates/dries with bubbles and a roughness that is hard to sand smooth.  I would keep with a brush.  Brush on the sealer in the direction of the grain until the whole surface is coated, is the general principle.

For the uneven final coat you had applied, I would sand it with 400 to 600 grit paper.  Sanding between coats of varnish help to "level the surface".   Try that first and then apply another coat of varnish.  Starting all over again would be a major project.  Try the sanding, another coat, and see how it stands out.  I've found personal success it that.

Thank you!
