Question
I was given a LARGE unfinished pine dresser. I would like to use latex water based paint as a transparent color. It is quite plain, I like it, I want to enhance the wood not paint it. I only have one chance to do it right. Any suggestions?  Please Help.

Thanx for your time,
Katie

Answer
Hi Katie, I would tend to steer you towards a commercially prepared stain product. Minwax has some nice ones in their "pastels" line. I would suggest clear coating it afterward for depth, overall evenness, and the maximum durabilty, with an Acrylic Urethane clear coat.

A suitable pickling type stain can be made from paint, but it can be a bit tricky to arrive at a workable formula without a lot of experimentation....and you'll find the application technique a bit tricky as it takes some technique to apply these finishes evenly. You'll need to work in sections, apply quickly and develop the feel for how to wipe it off evenly. Hope that helps- post back if need be- regards- Greg
