QuestionHi Mark.
I have a now sag spring that has come loose from the frame of a double recliner. Since there is allot of tension on the spring I am not able to just pull it up to the frame and nail or staple it. The clip is still attached to the spring and the spring is not broken. Do you have any suggestions on how to get the leverage needed to reattach the spring?
AnswerHi,
The job is very dangerous and I believe you should take it to an upholsterer to have him or her do the job. If you should decide to attempt the repair here is how to do so.
As you will have noticed there is no way to pull the spring since the chair sides are in the way. The only way that I know of to re attach the springs is to screw the clip against the side of the chair where it broke away, it is o.k. if it is an inch or so below the top.
You could make a jig from a 2X4 about 24" long with a strong hook, clip the spring on the hook and use that to push the spring onto the clip.
It may take two strong people to do the job. Wear heavy duty garden gloves to protect your hands, the job is very dangerous the spring could snap back and cause very serious injury. Two pairs of strong hands may be able to stretch the spring back into place and then while one holds the spring the other closes the clip and nails or screws it into place.
Remember the job is extremely dangerous, keep your face away from the spring so that if it gives way it will not injure you. Lay a heavy moving pad or towel over the spring where you are not working, that may absorb any energy if the spring gives way.
If that doesn't work you will need to take the chair to an upholsterer.
I hope this information helps.
