Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Oil for cutting boards

Question
Hi Jamie! I took your woodworking class many years ago through Akron U. That was by far the best Continuing Ed class I've ever taken. I made cutting boards for everyone one Christmas, they loved them. My question is what type of oil did we use to put on the boards? I know it was something that wouldn't become rancid, but I don't remember what it was called. I wish you were still here I would love to take the class again. I still have all my tools. Thanks,
Christy

Answer
Christy,

Small world, you finding me here on All-Experts. I'm pretty sure I remember you, isn't that funny after all these years, our paths would cross again?!

We used Watco Danish Oil, which is a synthetic oil that polymerizes to a non toxic finish. The manufacturer says to wait 30 days for the finish to cure to a non-toxic state, but honestly, it's not like you're boning a chicken on the board the next day, right?

We used the "Natural" version of Watco, which is their clear oil. You can find it at most of the big box hardware stores, like Home Depot or Lowes. Remember, wipe it off really well between coats, or it will dry sticky. We used to wet sand it with 220 sandpaper, and wipe it clean for the first coat. The next two coats, just a "wipe on / wipe off" is fine.

Nice to hear from you, hope this helps! Write back if you need more help,

Jamie
