Question
I have an expensive piece of furniture I bought from Ethan Allen.  It is a sofa table that sits behind our couch in front of the picture window.  I have notice some light brown spots on one side of the top of the table.  They seemed to come out of nowhere.  They do not respond to anything I have tried.  Any ideas?  Has something happened to the wood and it is yellowing?  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Judy
Nice to hear from you.
These spots did not come out of nowhere Judy, they came from the wood.
They cannot be removed.
To test this, dip a rag in a bit of mineral spirits (called varsol in Canada) and rub the spots. Bet they don't budge.
What a shame if you paid a lot of money for the table.
Perhaps talk to the store where it was purchased.
Ethan Allen should come good for this.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
