Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/old butcher block

Question
Hi Eilen,
My question is I got this old house that was built in the early 1950's or so. It has an old butcher block beside the stove and I would like to keep it. (it's very handy) but it is peeling and fading is there any way I can repair this and keep it to where I still can use it?

Thank you
Lisa

Answer
Hi Lisa
Nice to hear from you.
This hardwood butcher block can be sanded down and a coat of food grade finish applied.
I use walnut oil but perhaps there are newer and better alternatives available that do not pose an algery risk.
Sort of runs in my mind that tung oil is not harmful after a proper curing time.
Just going to check that out for you..............
Seems its OK but check for yourself.

Good Luck and great question

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
