Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Chair Repair

Question
I have two old chairs that need their seats repaired.  Over time both wooden seats have split along the original joints.  The splits range from a sliver's width to about 3/4" with each seat having at least 2-3 splits.  I was wondering how to best repair the damage while salvaging the original seats.  Is there a way that I could glue and clamp the pieces?  If you want photos then I can email them.

Answer
If you could email me pictures that would help. I need to determine if it is solid wood or not. Solid wood is scary because a lot of the time when it cracks thats kind of it. Solid wood is known to crack, and a lot of people will call it "natural."

But feel free to send pictures, and I will see if I can give you advice from that point.
