Question
Hi Eileen,

I have an old 30" X 40 " table that I need to refinish.  It isn't in bad condition but I didn't know if I could just sand it before I stain and varnish or if I needed to use some sort of stripper.  It has some old varnish that looks like it blistered.  If I need to strip the piece first what product to you recommend.  I don't want to dry out the wood.

Thank you so much!

Lisa

Answer
Hi Lisa
Nice to hear from you.
Throw away the sandpaper.
You cannot sand a finish off if you want to stain.
I recommend using Circa 1850 brand paint and varnish remover for this.
Here is a link

No other prep is needed after its use and it will not in any way dry out the wood or harm it.
And no sanding either LOL.
Its available at the hardware or places like the Depot.
You will only need a small can. Follow all precautions as stated on can.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
