Question
I have an old, cheap desk that is laminated (the old, slick wood grain look).  I have been told to use Kilz or spray paint to prime, pain, and then use 2 coats of sealant.  My question is..there is a piece of trim along the front that is coming loose and underneath this trim is particle board.  This needs to be removed.  Can I treat and finish the particle board the same as the laminated part???  Thank-you

Answer
Hi Mitzi
Think I answered part of this question before, but I just wanted to comment on painting the laminate.
You do not need to use Kilz or spray paint and sealant before you do your final paint color.
Laminate will not bleed through at all.
A brushed on coat of primer will be fine. Most especially if the laminate is dark and your paint color is lighter.

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
