Question
Can you please tell me the name of the item that covers rough wood edges? I just made a tabletop out of flooring planks. I cut the overhang of the planks hanging off the table. I want to cover over the rough edge of the wood planks on the table top. What is that called. The table top wood planks is only about 1/4" thick. I thought there was some sort of edge strip that covered that over. What is this called? Thanks. Larry

Answer
Hi Larry
Nice to hear from you.
It should be fairly simple to apply an edge to this but first you have to beef up the thickness as 1/4 inch is not enough to attach anything to.
Never heard a specific word applied to this as the edge is something you have to make not purchase.
To beef up the edge you need to make it thicker by gluing strips under the 4 table edges.
If you make these strips 3/4 inches thick that will give you an inch of thickness to add an edge around the top.
Then simply cut 4 edge pieces from your flooring boards and apply around the table.
This will give the appearance of a nice thick table top and be very sturdy too.
Sure hope I am reading this right Larry.
Hope this helps
Great project

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
