Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/furniture refinishing

Question
Hello, Eileen. I goofed-up. I was applying an oil-finish to a project (working outside)and the sun hit one area. When I went to wipe the area down it "crumbed" and now the area is unevenly streaky. What is the best way to deal with this? Should I just wipe it down with mineral spirits again (I tried this, not a complete fix) or do I need to clean it all off with steelwool and mineral spirits? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Terri
Nice to hear from you.
If the finish has hardened, you will not get it off with mineral spirits, but there is no harm in sanding the area smooth and applying another coat of oil. Use 180 grit sandpaper with a light hand.
And keep it out of the sun LOL.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
