Question
Old teak wood banisters were taken from place torn down in St. Augustine Florida.  Thinking about using them in a memorial garden 6 months of year heavy snows in the west.
No apparent natural oil left, uncared for very long time.
Any suggestions before I "plant" them?

Answer
Hi Clare
Nice to hear from you.
This wood will certainly need to be protected from the elements and it will also need regular maintenance if it is to remain outdoors.
I can relate to the weather you refer to as I am in Canada.
Personally I think the best protection will come from a marine spar varnish.
It seems to outlast paint in my neck of the woods, but it will still need maintenance.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
