Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/painting old oak desk

Question
Hi, I have an old oak desk that is in a very distressed condition. The finish is mostly worn off, some areas are stained or rough to the touch. It is still a very solid piece of furniture. I'd like to paint it, maybe even rub the paint off some edges to get that shabby-chic weathered look. I'm not sure how to prepare it or what kind of paint to use. Do I need wood putty to fill in especially rough areas? Please advise.

Answer
Hi Pam
Nice to hear from you.
I would use wood filler on these areas for sure.
All the prep that would be necessary is a light sanding then your paint.
Just remember that this look requires sanding back the paint in some areas so whatever is under the paint will show through.
In this case the wood will show through.
You would use normal water based paint.

Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
