Question
We have a new home (2 years old) with cherry finished cabinets. On all the cabinets that get used-  like the front of the kitchen sink-  the bathroom sink-  the cabinets finish is wearing off on the corners and top parts.  So parts of the cabine is a natural wood color and parts are cherry colored. It is odd looking.  I think the builder tried to get by on the cheap- anyways-  how do I fix this?  Do I have to sand EVERYTHING off first and start a new?  Can I re-stain the worn parts? and seal it with a good poly or something?    I can send you a photo of you need to see it.  thanks!!

Answer
I think if you have the time, it would be worth it to start all over. The problem is your going to have to be sure to match the existing color which can be tricky.

If you don't have too many cabinets, you may want to consider re doing them all. If you have a lot of cabinets, then just do the ones that need it most.

If you try to re stain the areas that are worn only, you may notice a different look, and it may look cheaply done. Sand off everything, and start new. You have a good idea with the poly. I think that even just a thin coat of polyurethane will help to protect your cabinets better.

When it comes to staining, I think you should grab some scrap wood and practice on that. You will notice with staining, the more stain you add, you will get a different look and color. Its like painting, when you paint it on thin you get one look, and when its on thick, you get another look completely. Balance it out, let it dry, and use the amount that appears to match what you have the best.

Good luck!
