Question
QUESTION: I just bought a used rocking chair which the former owner claims to be antique.  Anyway, two of the spindles are broken. I first thought of gluing them but I intent to used the rocking chair. If I replace the spindles, what type of glue should I use?  Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Hi Norma
Nice to hear from you.
On genuine antiques restorers always use hide glue to make repairs as that was what was used originally.
The word "antique" is used in a very broad range and personally I would not worry about trying to find hide glue to repair two spindles.
I would use a good quality carpenters glue.
I would be more concerned that I had to use replacement spindles.
I always fix them if all the parts are there.
Great Question

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Actually, one spindle is broken off the chair and cut in half( not a straight cut though) and I have the pieces.  The other spindle was broken off with a small piece sticking up from the from the chair (where you sit)but they couldn't find the spindle, I guess I'll have to look for a replacement.  My husband suggested gorilla glue, re-sand and refinish.  Is this a good idea?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi again Norma
Try to repair the broken spindle at least.
I have never used Gorilla glue but just read a bit about it and see no reason not to use it for this repair.
If you can find a furniture refinisher in your area, that would be my first stop in looking for a replacement spindle.
I have a large supply of salvage spindles and I think others will too.
If you mean sanding the whole chair and refinishing it I would discourage that but not a proper stripping and a new finish applied.
Good Luck

Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
