Question
Hi, I'm planning to color this piece of furniture to match the decor of the nursery.  The furniture is wood and only finished with polyurethane.  Is it ok if I skip the sanding and priming part and just get a bottle of spray paint to color it??  what is the easiest way  to transform the piece??

Answer
Hi Anni
Nice to hear from you.
You can skip the priming but not the sanding.
You need a surface that the new finish can stick to.
Most especially if you are painting over a poly.
But if the sanding dust is the problem, you could use a TSP solution and a steel wool pad as a scrubber.
This will deglaze the surface enough hopefully for the paint to stick.
Personally I do not feel that spraying a piece of furniture does as nice a job as a paint brush. But thats just me.
Perhaps you are good with a spray can.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
