Question
We have a summer home in Maine where the temps can go below zero degrees.
Last winter we tried to keep the home at low heat but an unknown power outage
cost thousands in water damage.  This year we would like to winterize pipes and
let house go cold but are concerned about antique furniture and art.  Any
thoughts about the furniture?  Thank you!

Answer
In the dry air of winter, furniture usually dries out and gets dry marks or even worse can get cracks. To prevent this, before you leave, apply furniture oil to all of the wood. Make sure to get the right oils for the right type of woods. Some furniture oils come with conditioners or cleaners right in them which is your best bet.

Apply the oil with one cloth, and remove the oil with another dry cloth. Don't be afraid to apply a good amount to each piece. The oil should help keep everything protected and conditioned.

Hope this helps.
