Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/removing black stains from pine treads

Question
I recently removed carpenting from my stairs (pine) that were installed when I first bought my new townhome. I noticed that there are black stains on the pine treads. I tried mildew remover but that did not work. I also sanded  using an 80 coarse grit and that did not work. I finally tried detergent bleach on a small area and that seem to remove the stain but it lighten the color of the pine which is okay. Shall I apply the bleach to the rest of the treads to make it even and is it safe to use this bleach on the pine ? I also did some research online and found that wood bleach (one that contains two solutions) is also good but not sure if it is safe to use. Does the bleach contain a strong odor? I have a dog and an elderly relative lives with me. Thanks for your prompt response.

Answer
The wood bleach, if it is the Sherwin Williams brand, is all that I've used and was great to work with in a simlar situation involving White Oak (the Vincent Price home in Hollywood Hills) where bees had nested in the ceiling and dripped honey onto the floor.  I don't remember much of an oder.  I would get a small container and sample it outside before making the choice use indoors.  There are many brands out there, and I'm not sure all are the same.  Sherwin Williams, as I recall, had a good product.
