Question
Hi, I have a mahogany dining room table and hutch. I also have an old microwave stand in there that acts as a liquor cabinet and cookbook storage. It is a light wood and my husband says it has lacquer on it. I would like to stain it mahogany to match the other pieces of wood in the room. Can you tell me how to proceed? Thank you very much,
Carrie

Answer
Hi Carrie
Nice to hear from you.
You did not say what the micro wave stand was made from but I'll guess fiberboard with a false wood look.
If thats the case it cannot be stripped which is what must be done to re-stain.
Carrie can I offer a suggestion as an alternative?
What about painting the stand so it blends better with your dining set?
Very easy to do.
Just a light scuffing of the lacquer finish and then the paint.
Sorry but I see no other options.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
