About Eileen Cronk
Expertise
Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience
I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.

Subject: Darkening wood on an entertainment center

Question
Eileen,
I have a lovely 1970s Thomasville Entertainment Center. Three pieces solid wood. Not a scratch on it, just a lovely quality piece. It is a medium oak & I would like to darken it to a walnut to go with the rest of my recently inherited furniture from my Grandmother. Is there a way/product to do this without stripping/sanding. Is this a DIY project?  Just so you know the expertise level you are dealing with.....I don't even paint my own fingernails.

Answer
Hi Theresa
Nice to hear from you.
This is not a do it yourself project..for non finger nail painters LOL.
Seriously though the piece will need all the finish removed before its stained.
And it may end up it will need a colored lacquer sprayed on to get the walnut color you want as it may not take a dark stain.
So consult a pro with your desired look and get his opinion.
Perhaps they will just spray it darker with minimal surface prep.
Great Question
Regards
Eileen
