Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Old wood bench

Question
QUESTION: I have an old wooden bench. It still has some of the old square head nails in it that leads me to believe that it's pretty old. The wood is 16x1 1/4 and has a nice aged greyish patina. It recently had some olive oil absorbed into a small spot (4x4). It has caused me to think about refinishing the top surface. I've been using it for a coffee table and more spills are probably bound to happen. Any suggestions. Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Richard
Nice to hear from you.
If this is going to be used for a coffee table I agree it needs something.
Usually multiple coats of paste wax are applied to retain the old look.
Any spills (if they are imediately wiped) will not penetrate.
Good Luck

QUESTION: Can you suggest a paste wax and will it be better than polyurethane? Thanks

Answer
Hi again Richard
Sorry but I think I misunderstood your first question totally (its an age thing LOL).
You are right a poly finish is the best. I like Minwax fast drying poly in a low luster.
Far superior to wax. But Bri wax is a good wax.
Also an oil finish would be better than wax. Tung oil is a good choice.
Hope this clarifies.

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
