Question
Hi,
I recently bought a buffet from Crate and Barrel that is described as: white lacquered engineered wood with solid wood banding.  I do not want it to be white, how should I go about changing the color? Can it ever look or be stained like wood, can I paint is, etc?

Thanks,
Shannon

Answer
Hi Shannon
Nice to hear from you.
While this piece can certainly be painted it cannot be made to look like wood.
This type of "wood" can be painted with very good results.
All thats needed it to rough the surface with a light sanding.
Hopefully you can keep the solid wood banding but it will need to be masked off with painters tape before painting.
Actually I feel it will look quite nice painted other than white.
Hope this helps
Great Question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
