Question
we have a table which has been well waxed over the years before we got it.  Is it possible to remove ALL of the wax?  What sort of finish is beneath it, if any?  It is about 40-50 yrs old.  Our concern is that the surface will be scratched, etc. from daily (hard) use.  I would like to apply a real varnish but not urethane or polyurethane.

Answer
Hi William
Nice to hear from you.
The only thing I know of that will remove this wax is mineral spirits.
Use fine steel wool dipped in the spirits as a scrubber.
Dry as you go with clean rags and always work with the grain.
Thats the wax removed.
William I understand where you're coming from with regards the underlying finish.
You don't know what it is nor do I so we'll just carry on LOL.
After the de-waxing, the surface should be deglazed a bit more so the new varnish will stick well.
I would use 220 sandpaper with a light hand.
You don't want to get into a situation where you remove color from the wood.
Personally I would avoid varnish but thats just me..I don't like it.
But if you prefer a varnish finish apply two light coats.
And remember any finish that gets hard use will scratch and marr.
I don't care what finish it is, it will do this.
Good luck with this and thanks for a great question.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
