Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Can Yellow Oak Cabinets Be Refinished to Cherry?

Question
Hi Eileen,

I have an important question regarding refinishing Yellow Oak Kitchen Cabinetry to a Spice Cherry finish - can this be done, if I find the right professional?

We are considering buying a house that has nice quality cabinetry, but the finish, as I mentioned, is yellow oak. I'm concerned that that the deeper grain figure of yellow oak would not be filled appropriately by paint, kilz or any other product to create an initial smooth finish. Additionally, I've never seen a cherry faux finish that closely mimics the look of the tighter cherry grain. However, someone tells me it can be done, and we are considering having them provide a sample using a similar Yellow Oak from an entertainment armoire first.

What is your opinion about attempting this?

Thanks Eileen, Vince.

Answer
Hi Vince
Nice to hear from you.
Interesting question.
Its like making a silk purse from a sows ear LOL...well something like that.
Seriously I have never seen oak grain filled to the point that it can mimic the smooth surface of cherry.
But I haven't seen everything.I agree with the sample before this is attempted.
I remember a while back being asked about grain filling on finished cabinets and I said at that time that in my opinion, all finish must be removed before its attempted.
I stand by that still.
I just cannot see the filler sticking on finished cabinets.
So ask about that too.
And if someone comes up with a sample, put it through some good rubbing just as you will do with the cabinets that will need constant wiping down.
Really look into this
Great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
